This city is a major trade center for the Midwest region. Its port is the fifth-busiest on the Great Lakes. In the year 2020, the city had 270,871 residents. The whole metropolitan area has about 601,000 people living there.

Long ago, this land was home to many different tribes. The Wyandot and the Odawa people lived in this area.

The French arrived by 1680 to start a fur trade. They built trading posts to help with this business. The Odawa people settled along the Maumee River. They acted as middlemen between the French and other tribes. Later, the United States made treaties to move these groups away. The last Odawa group left the area in 1839.

The city of Toledo has a very interesting start. It was founded in 1833 on the Maumee River.

Two small towns named Port Lawrence and Vistula merged together. They chose the name Toledo because it sounds pleasant. There was even a conflict called the Toledo War. Ohio and Michigan fought over a strip of land. No one was killed in the actual fighting. Ohio eventually won the land after a deal was made.

Toledo grew very fast after the Miami and Erie Canal was finished.

The canal helped boats move goods to big markets. Later, railroads became even more important for travel. These trains were much faster than the canal boats. By the 1880s, many glass makers arrived in the city.
