It sits right on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Three different rivers meet in the city: the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic rivers.

This special location made it a great place for trade. As a major city, it is the 31st largest in the United States. The Milwaukee metropolitan area is home to over 1.57 million people.

Long before the city was built, many Native American tribes lived here.

These groups included the Menominee, Meskwaki, Sauk, Potawatomi, and Ojibwe peoples. They lived along the waterways for thousands of years. These tribes played important roles in many European wars on the continent. Later, European settlers arrived and used the rivers to move goods. In 1833, a treaty was signed that changed who lived on the land. This helped the city grow into a hub for industry.

The city was started by three different men known as founding fathers.

Solomon Juneau arrived in 1818 and started a town called Juneautown. Byron Kilbourn started a rival town called Kilbourntown west of the river. George H. Walker built a home in the area that became Walker's Point. These early towns even had a "Bridge War" in 1845 because of their rivalries. Finally, the towns joined together in 1846 to become the City of Milwaukee. Solomon Juneau served as the very first mayor.

Many people moved to Milwaukee from far away to find work.

A huge number of immigrants came from Germany during the 1800s. By the year 1900, about 34 percent of the people were of German background. This is why the city is still known for its German culture today. Many Polish immigrants also moved to the South Side for jobs. In the late 1800s and 1900s, Milwaukee became famous for making beer. Famous breweries like Miller, Pabst, and Schlitz led the way.

Today, Milwaukee is a place full of culture and big business.
