Toaster

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A toaster is a small tool that uses heat. It makes sliced bread crunchy. This happens through the Maillard reaction. This is a change that turns bread brown.

Most toasters have slots for bread. You drop bread in and press a lever. This lowers the bread. It also turns on the heating parts. These parts are often made of nichrome wire. This is a special metal that stays strong when hot.

When the bread is ready, it pops up. A timer or a sensor helps. A sensor might be a bimetallic strip. This is a part that feels heat. It tells the toaster to stop. Some toasters can toast bagels or waffles too. But sugar and fat from food can break them.

Some toasters are small ovens. They can also bake or broil food. They heat food faster than big ovens. Other machines use a belt. These are conveyor toasters. They can toast many slices every hour.
