Tic-tac-toe is a famous paper-and-pencil game for two players.

Depending on where you live, it has different names. In the United States, it is called "tic-tac-toe." In places like Australia or India, people call it "noughts and crosses." The name "noughts and crosses" comes from the shapes used in the game. A "nought" is another word for the number zero, which looks like an O. A "cross" refers to the X shape. This simple game is loved because it is easy to learn and play anywhere.

To play, you need a grid with nine spaces.

One player uses Xs and the other uses Os. Players take turns marking one empty space at a time. The goal is to get three of your marks in a row. This row can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. When someone wins, they often draw a line through their three marks. If all nine spaces are filled without a winner, the game is a draw. Some people call this a "cat's game."

This way of playing has a very long history.

People have played similar games for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, game boards were found on roofing tiles from around 1300 BC. In the Roman Empire around the first century BC, people played a version called "terni lapilli." Instead of marks, they used three pebbles each. They had to move their pebbles to empty spaces to keep playing. Chalk drawings of these grids have even been found all over Rome.

Scientists and students use this game to learn many things.

Because the rules are simple, it is a great tool for teaching sportsmanship. It is also used to study artificial intelligence. Computers can easily learn to play the game perfectly. In 1952, a scientist named Sandy Douglas created OXO for a computer at the University of Cambridge. This was one of the first known video games. Later, in 1975, students at MIT used a computer made of Tinkertoys to play the game.

There is a lot of math hidden inside the grid.

If you look at all the possible ways to play, there are 26,830 different games. There are also 765 different ways the marks can look on the board. If both players use the best possible strategy, the game will always end in a draw. This makes it a "solved game." Players can learn to block their opponent's moves or create a "fork." A fork is when you have two ways to win at once.
