The main goal is to fence off more territory than your opponent. You do this by surrounding empty spaces with your stones. One player uses black stones and the other uses white stones. This game is very special to many people. In ancient China, it was one of the four essential arts for cultured scholars. Today, it remains a popular way for people to test their skill and focus.

Playing a game of Go follows simple rules but requires great thought. Players take turns placing one stone on the intersections of a grid. These intersections are called points. Once a stone is placed, it stays in that spot and does not move. However, you can remove stones if they are captured. You capture a stone by surrounding it on all adjacent points. These empty points are called liberties.

If a stone has only one liberty left, it is in a state called atari.

This game has a very long and rich history. It was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago. Many people believe it is the oldest board game still played today. The game reached Korea by the 5th century CE. It later reached Japan in the 7th century CE.

The earliest written reference to the game is found in the historical record called Zuo Zhuan. Over many centuries, the game has changed and grown. Even the boards have changed over time.

There are many interesting facts about how Go is played. A standard board has a 19x19 grid with 361 points. Beginners often start on smaller 9x9 or 13x13 boards.

In 2016, a survey found over 46 million people know how to play. There are over 20 million current players worldwide. Most of these players live in East Asia. The game is incredibly vast and complex. The number of possible positions is larger than the number of atoms in the observable universe.

Go is much different from other games like chess. It has a larger board and much longer games. You must think about the whole board at once. Players try to make "living" groups of stones. A group is safe if it has at least two eyes, which are separate open points.

If a group cannot make two eyes, it might be captured. Players also use a point system called komi to balance the game. This gives extra points to the white player for playing second. This helps make the competition fair for everyone.
