It was made in China over 2,500 years ago. Many people believe it is the oldest board game still played today. Most players live in East Asia. There are over 20 million people who play it now.

Players use black and white stones. They take turns placing stones on the lines of a grid. A standard board has 19 lines by 19 lines. This makes 361 points to play on. Beginners might use smaller boards with 9 or 13 lines.

Once a stone is placed, it does not move. You can only remove stones if you capture them.

You capture stones by surrounding them. You must block all the empty points next to a stone. These empty points are called liberties.

If a stone has only one liberty left, it is in danger. This state is called atari.

The goal is to fence off more territory than your opponent. You win by counting your empty space and your captured stones. In the past, wise scholars in China saw Go as a great art. It is a very deep and complex game.
