It comes from ancient Egypt. People played it for over 2,000 years. Some think it may have started in the Levant.

The game uses a board with 30 squares. These squares are in three rows of ten. We call these squares "houses." The board might be made of wood, ivory, or faience, which is a type of glazed ceramic. Each player uses five pawns. In the New Kingdom, these pawns looked like little dogs or hounds.

Ancient people saw the game as more than just fun. It had religious meaning. It could represent a soul passing through the afterlife.

We do not know the exact original rules. The game stopped being played during the Roman period. Today, experts use old texts to make new rules. One way to play uses four flat sticks. These sticks act like dice. You count how many land on white to move your pawns. Some houses have special rules. For example, the House of Water can send a pawn backward. The goal is to move all your pawns across the board.
