Checkers is a famous strategy game for two players.

People often call it draughts in British English. The name "checkers" comes from the checkered pattern on the board. Players sit on opposite sides to face each other. One person uses dark pieces, like black. The other person uses light pieces, like white or red.

You only move your pieces on the dark squares. This game is a wonderful way to test your planning skills. It is a game that people can play together or online.

To play, you move your pieces to an empty square nearby. At the start, pieces can only move forward. If an opponent's piece is in front of you, you can jump over it. You must land on an empty square right behind them. When you jump, that piece is removed from the board.

In many official rules, you must capture if you can. If you forget to jump, your opponent might remove your piece as a penalty. This penalty is sometimes called a "muffin." A player loses if they have no pieces left. They also lose if all their pieces are blocked and cannot move.

Sometimes, a piece reaches the very last row on the opponent's side. This row is called the kings row or crown head. When this happens, the piece becomes a king. You mark this by placing another piece on top of it.

Kings are much more powerful than regular pieces, called "men." In American checkers, a king can move and jump backwards. In international draughts, they are called "flying kings." These special kings can move many squares at once. They can jump over an opponent from a long distance. This makes the game very exciting and fast.

Checkers grew from a very old game called Alquerque.

Alquerque was played on a small 5x5 grid. It was played by people in the Arab world long ago. By the 13th century, the game began to move to chess boards. This change caused the game to split into different paths. In Europe, players started moving only on diagonal lines. This led to the English version we know today. In the Arab world, players kept moving in straight lines. This created Turkish draughts, which uses different rules for kings.

There are many ways to play checkers around the world. Most people use an 8x8 board for American or Russian draughts. However, international draughts uses a much larger 10x10 board. Some versions even use a huge 12x12 board!

Even computers can play this game now. In 2007, a team led by Jonathan Schaeffer used computers to study American checkers. They found that if both players play perfectly, the game ends in a draw. Whether you play on a real board or a phone app, the challenge remains the same.
