Janggi is a famous strategy board game from the Korean Peninsula.

It is a game of skill and deep thinking. Players compete using two different colors of pieces. One side uses Red pieces. The other side uses Blue or Green pieces.

The game is very similar to Chinese chess, called xiangqi. However, the janggi board has no "river" dividing the middle. This change makes the game feel different. People love playing it to test their wits.

The game is played on a board with 90 intersections. These come from 9 vertical lines and 10 horizontal rows.

Each player has a palace at their side. The palace is a 3x3 area with diagonal lines. The leader, or general, must stay inside this palace.

Guards also stay in the palace to protect the leader. Other pieces move across the whole board. Chariots are the most powerful pieces and move in straight lines. Horses move in a specific L-shape pattern. Elephants move in a large, wide pattern.

Cannons are unique because they must jump over one piece to move. Soldiers move one step at a time, either forward or sideways.

Janggi has a long history tied to ancient stories. The generals represent two rival states named Han and Chu. These states fought for power a long time ago. In the red pieces, the characters use a regular script. The blue pieces use a cursive script.

In North Korea, the names for the generals are slightly different. There, the red general is called jang and the blue is gwan. These names reflect how different people view the game's history.

There are many specific rules for playing in tournaments. In South Korean tournaments, the game must have a winner. If a position repeats three times, a referee helps. The referee may ask a player to make a new move.

This ensures the game does not go on forever. Players can also win by counting points if no one can win by checkmate. Red pieces start with 73.5 points. Blue pieces start with 72 points. This extra 1.5 points for Red helps balance the game because Blue moves first.

You might see janggi being played in many places today. In Seoul, older men often gather in city parks to play.

They might play for small amounts of money. While it is less popular than the game baduk, it remains a special part of culture. It is a way for people to gather and share a challenge. Whether in a park or a tournament, the game is a lively test of mind.
