He lived a long time ago in a city called Icarius. Before him, people mostly sang songs in groups. These songs were called dithyrambs. They told stories about myths. Thespis changed how stories were told. He was the first person to act as a character. He did not just speak as himself. He used masks to show different people in a story. This new style was called tragedy. Many people call him the "Inventor of Tragedy."

Thespis was a very skilled performer. In 534 BC, he won a big contest in Athens. This contest was for the best tragedy.

He also started a way to tour with plays. He used a horse-drawn wagon to travel. He carried his masks and costumes in it. This helped him bring shows to many cities. We still remember him today. In English, we call actors "thespians" to honor him. Some theater groups even use his name. One group in Greece is named "The Wagon of Thespis."
