It is a bronze sculpture of a muscular man. He sits on a large rock in a very specific pose. His right elbow rests on his left thigh. He uses the back of his right hand to support his chin. This posture shows a person lost in deep thought.

Because of this, people use the image to represent philosophy and contemplation.

Creating this statue involved many careful steps. The artist first made a small plaster version around 1881. Later, the figure was enlarged to a height of 181 cm.

This large version became the artist's first work placed in a public space. The bronze was finely polished and given a special finish called a patina. The figure is designed to be seen from below. For this reason, it is often displayed on a high base or plinth.

Auguste Rodin began this work in 1880. He originally planned it as part of a larger project called The Gates of Hell.

This large doorway was inspired by a poem by Dante Alighieri. Some people believe the man is the poet Dante himself. However, other critics disagree because the figure is naked. Rodin wanted a heroic figure to represent both intellect and poetry. He used a muscular French wrestler named Jean Baud as his model.

There are many different versions of this famous sculpture. The first bronze version was made in 1884.

You can find that specific cast in Melbourne, Australia. The first full-sized bronze model was shown in Paris in 1904. Today, there are about 29 large bronze casts in museums and public places. The original monumental bronze is kept at the Musée Rodin in Paris. Some newer versions were made after Rodin died, which are called posthumous castings.

Many other artists have explored the idea of a person thinking. Long ago, the Hamangia culture made a sculpture called the Thinker of Cernavodă. In Greece, a clay figure called the Karditsa Thinker was found. Even the famous artist Michelangelo made a sculpture of a thinker. He created a tomb for Lorenzo de' Medici that features a contemplative figure. These works show that humans have always found the act of thinking to be a powerful subject for art.
