The Thinker is a world-famous bronze sculpture by the artist Auguste Rodin.

It depicts a nude male figure of heroic proportions. The man sits upon a large rock in a state of intense concentration. His right elbow rests on his left thigh. He supports his chin with the back of his right hand. This specific posture is a universal symbol of deep thought and contemplation.

Because of this pose, the image is often used to represent philosophy and introspection.

The creation of the sculpture involved several distinct stages and technical processes. Rodin first produced a small plaster version around 1881. He later enlarged the figure to a height of 181 cm.

This monumental version became his first work designed for a public space. The final bronze works were finely polished and given a patina. A patina is a surface coating that changes the color of the metal. The figure is designed to be viewed from a low angle. Consequently, it is usually displayed on a high plinth, which is a heavy base.

Rodin began this project in 1880 as part of a larger commission. This work was titled The Gates of Hell. It was intended to serve as a doorway surround. The concept was based on the 14th-century poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Rodin placed the figure at the center of the composition. Some critics argue the figure represents Dante himself. Others disagree because the sculpture is nude. Dante is described as fully clothed in his poem. Rodin instead wanted a heroic figure to represent both intellect and poetry.

To achieve this, he used a muscular French wrestler named Jean Baud as his model.

The history of the sculpture's various versions is quite complex. The first bronze version was executed in 1884.

This specific cast is held at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. The first full-scale model was presented in Paris in 1904. A public subscription helped finance a bronze casting for the City of Paris. This version was placed in front of the Panthéon. In 1922, the original bronze was moved to the Musée Rodin. Today, there are approximately 29 known monumental-sized bronze casts in museums and public spaces. Many other versions exist in different scales, including plaster studies and posthumous castings.

Artistic influence and reception of the work have been significant. The sculpture helped herald a new age of modernism in three-dimensional art. Its image has appeared in various media. For example, Charlie Chaplin used the statue in his film The Great Dictator. He modified the pose to comment on Nazi propaganda. In the film Night at the Museum 2, the statue is depicted as coming to life. The sculpture's value is also notable in the art market. In June 2022, a cast from 1928 was estimated to be worth up to €14 million at an auction in Paris.

Humanity has a long history of depicting thinkers in art. Many different cultures have created similar works. The "Karditsa Thinker" is a Neolithic clay figurine from Greece. It dates to approximately 3900 BCE. The "Thinker of Cernavodă" is a terracotta sculpture from the Hamangia culture. It is believed to be one of the earliest prehistoric sculptures showing self-reflection. In Israel, the "Thinker from Yehud" was discovered in a tomb. This figurine dates to the Middle Bronze Age II, between 1800 and 1600 BCE. These ancient objects show that the concept of contemplation is a very old human interest.

Rodin's work also connects to the masterpieces of the Renaissance. Michelangelo created a famous tomb for Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence. This tomb features a muscular, contemplative figure. The figure's elbow rests on a money box. While the style is different, the theme of the thinker remains the same. Rodin's work was also inspired by Michelangelo's sculpture of Lorenzo de' Medici. This sculpture is called Il Pensieroso, which means "The Thinker." By using these classical themes, Rodin connected his modern work to the great traditions of the past.
