Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor who transformed the world of art.

Many historians consider him the founder of modern sculpture. He moved away from the decorative and formulaic traditions of his time. Instead, he focused on naturalism, which means showing the human body as it truly appears. His work celebrated physical character and the complexity of human emotion.

This approach made his sculptures feel alive and deeply personal.

Rodin used a unique method to create his textures. He had a special ability to model clay into complex, turbulent surfaces. These surfaces were often deeply pocketed to catch light and shadow. This technique allowed him to convey intense movement and feeling. He did not just create smooth shapes; he created surfaces that felt active. This mastery of material became a hallmark of his artistic identity.

His career included several distinct stages and roles. For much of his early life, he worked as a craftsman. He produced architectural embellishments, such as decorations for staircases and doorways. He also spent time as a designer for the Sèvres national porcelain factory. In this role, he created vases and table ornaments that gained European renown. Later, he transitioned into a sculptor of massive public commissions and private works.

Rodin's path to success was marked by significant setbacks. Born in Paris in 1840, he was largely self-educated. He attempted to enter the École des Beaux-Arts three separate times. However, he was rejected all three times, likely due to the judges' Neoclassical tastes. He spent twenty years working as a decorator to support his family. A pivotal moment occurred in 1875 during a two-month trip to Italy. There, he studied the works of Donatello and Michelangelo. Rodin credited Michelangelo with freeing him from the constraints of academic sculpture.

As his reputation grew, Rodin received major commissions that defined his legacy. In 1880, he won the right to create a portal for a museum. This project became his massive, unfinished work known as The Gates of Hell.

He worked on this portal for nearly forty years. Many of his most famous individual sculptures originated from this project. These include the iconic figures The Thinker and The Kiss. He also completed significant works like The Burghers of Calais and the Monument to Balzac.

Rodin's life was also defined by intense personal relationships. He lived with Rose Beuret for most of his life, and they married in his final year. He also had a passionate and stormy relationship with the sculptor Camille Claudel.

Claudel was a talented artist who served as his associate and creative rival. She even modeled for many of his figures. His social circle included many high-profile intellectuals and artists. By 1900, his fame was so great that wealthy private clients sought his work globally.

Even with his success, Rodin faced constant controversy. When he produced The Age of Bronze, critics accused him of sculptural cheating. They believed the work was so naturalistic that he must have cast it from a living model. To counter these claims, he began making works that were intentionally much larger or smaller than life. Despite these criticisms, his influence expanded through his students. Artists like Constantin Brâncuși and Antoine Bourdelle studied under him.
