He played a vital role in the transition from the Beaux-Arts style to modern sculpture. This means he helped move art from older, traditional methods toward more modern ideas. He was also a central figure in the Art Deco movement. This movement is known for its bold and decorative styles. His work helped bridge the gap between different eras of art history.

Bourdelle's artistic process began with a foundation in woodworking. His father was a wood craftsman and cabinet-maker. At age thirteen, Bourdelle left school to work in his father's workshop. There, he began carving his first sculptures out of wood. This early training gave him a deep understanding of physical materials. He later moved to formal art schools to refine these skills. He eventually mastered working with various materials to create large-scale public monuments.

His career was shaped by several important stages and collaborations. In 1893, he joined the studio of the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin. This collaboration lasted for fifteen years. During this time, he worked closely with Rodin while developing his own voice. In 1895, he received his first official commission for a war monument in Montauban. Although his plans caused a scandal, Rodin helped him complete the project. By 1900, Bourdelle created a bust of Apollo to show his independence from Rodin's style.

Bourdelle's life began in Montauban, France, on October 30, 1861. He received a scholarship to the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse in 1876. In 1884, he earned second place in a competition to enter the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He worked in the studio of Alexandre Falguière and lived near Jules Dalou. In 1885, he won an honorable mention at the annual Salon of artists. This award was for his work titled "The First Victory of Hannibal." He continued to work in the same Paris studio until his death in 1929.

The significance of his work is seen in his massive influence on other artists. He was a dedicated teacher at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. His students included famous artists like Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti.

He also co-founded the Institut Rodin-Debois-Bourdelle, a free school of sculpture. His design for the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1913 helped launch the Art Deco style. For his many contributions, he was honored as a Commander of the Legion of Honor. This is one of France's highest honors.

There are many notable examples of his creativity and dedication. Inspired by the music of Beethoven, he created about forty different sculptures of the composer.
