The Mature Age is a powerful sculpture by the French artist Camille Claudel.

It is also known by names like Destiny or The Path of Life. This art piece shows three naked figures moving together through swirling drapes of cloth. A young woman kneels on the ground and has just let go of a man's hand. This man is older and stands between the two women. An older woman embraces him and pulls him away. Some people see this as a story about growing old. It shows a man leaving youth to move toward maturity and death.

Claudel used this art to share her own deep feelings. She wrote letters to her brother, Paul Claudel, to explain the meaning. She said the group of figures represented Destiny. The sculpture may also tell the story of her own life. Claudel had a complicated relationship with the artist Auguste Rodin. He was her teacher and her partner for many years. However, he chose not to marry her. This caused a painful separation between them in 1892. The sculpture might show her pleading with him while he leaves.

Creating this work was a long and changing process. Claudel began working on the idea around 1893. She first made a version out of plaster between 1894 and 1895. That first version had a different shape with the figures closer together. She later changed the design to make it more dynamic. In the new version, two figures leave the third one behind. This revised work was finished in 1898. She showed the plaster version at a large art show in 1899.

There are two main bronze versions of this sculpture today. The first was made in 1902 for a private client named Captain Tissier. This bronze is now kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. It is quite large and weighs 140 kilograms. The second bronze was made in 1913 by Frédéric Carvilhani. This one is kept at the Musée Rodin in Paris. Paul Claudel gave this second version to the museum in 1952.

This sculpture connects to many famous stories and people. Some people think the older woman is a goddess like Clotho. Others think she might be Venus. The young woman represents youth and relates to the story of Psyche and Cupid. Even the history of the art is full of surprises. One version was found by chance in a Paris flat. The flat had been empty for 15 years! This version was sold at an auction in February 2025.
