They formed in 1977 in the city of Coventry. The group mixed different styles of music together. They used the danceable rhythms of ska and rocksteady. They also added the loud energy of punk music. This unique sound made their music very exciting to hear. The band wanted to use their songs to talk about important social ideas.

The band members often wore smart 1960s outfits. These included pork pie hats and special suits. This look was part of the "rude boy" style. It helped the band stand out on stage.

The band started with a very important goal. Jerry Dammers wanted to bring black and white people together. This idea was part of the 2-Tone movement. They even started their own record label called 2 Tone Records. In 1979, they released their first big hit called "Gangsters." This song was a reworking of a song by Prince Buster. It helped the band become famous across the country. They worked hard to keep their music independent.

Many of their songs became huge hits in the UK. In 1980, the song "Too Much Too Young" reached number one. Their famous song "Ghost Town" also hit number one in 1981.

Later, the group performed as the Special AKA. They released the song "Free Nelson Mandela" in 1984. This song reached number nine on the charts. It helped many people learn about the fight against apartheid. It became a very important song for activists.

The band changed many times over the years. Some members left to start a new group called Fun Boy Three. Other members joined and left as the years went by. The group continued to play and record for a long time. They performed with different groups of people. The band finally came to an end in December 2022. This happened after the singer Terry Hall passed away. Their music still connects people to the history of ska and punk.
