The Specials were an influential English musical group formed in 1977 in Coventry.

They are most famous for leading the 2 Tone movement. This movement blended the danceable rhythms of ska and rocksteady with the intense energy of punk rock. The band used their music to provide overt social and political commentary. They often wore "rude boy" outfits inspired by 1960s fashion. These outfits included pork pie hats, tonic suits, and loafers. Their goal was to use music as a tool for integration. Jerry Dammers, the primary songwriter, believed the band should bring black and white people together.

Creating the Specials' unique sound required a specific group of musicians working in harmony. The core lineup featured Terry Hall and Neville Staple on vocals. Jerry Dammers provided the melodic foundation on keyboards. The rhythm section consisted of Horace Panter on bass and John Bradbury on drums. Guitars were played by Lynval Golding and Roddy Radiation. To achieve their signature ska sound, the band also utilized horn players like Dick Cuthell and Rico Rodriguez. This combination of instruments allowed them to transition between high-energy punk and rhythmic ska.

The band's history is marked by several distinct stages and name changes. They began as the Coventry Automatics before changing their name to the Special A.K.A. due to another band having the same name. Eventually, they shortened this to The Specials, which became their most recognized moniker. In the early 1980s, the group underwent a major split. Hall, Staple, and Golding left to form the pop group Fun Boy Three. The remaining members continued performing under the name the Special AKA. This era saw a revolving door of musicians, creating a state of constant flux.

The rise of the band was fueled by both independent spirit and major support. In 1979, Dammers formed the 2 Tone Records label. They released their debut single, "Gangsters," through a do-it-yourself operation. This record was a reworking of a Prince Buster song. After initial success, the independent label Rough Trade helped distribute the single. This allowed the song to become a Top 10 hit. The band eventually signed with Chrysalis Records. This deal allowed 2 Tone to exist as an independent sub-label for other non-signed bands.

The commercial significance of the group is reflected in their chart success. Between 1979 and 1981, the band achieved seven consecutive UK top 10 singles. Their EP, *The Special AKA Live!*, reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 1980 with "Too Much Too Young." In 1981, the single "Ghost Town" also reached the No. 1 position. Later, as the Special AKA, they released "Free Nelson Mandela" in 1984. This song reached No. 9 in the UK. It became a significant anthem for anti-apartheid activists in South Africa.

The band's legacy includes several notable and sometimes difficult musical moments. The song "The Boiler," featuring vocalist Rhoda Dakar, provided a frank and harrowing depiction of date rape. Although it was controversial and received limited radio play, it reached No. 35 on the UK charts. The group's influence extended to other artists and projects. Members formed groups like Special Beat, Sunday Best, and General Public. Even after the original lineup dissolved, the members remained active in the music industry through production and various collaborations.

The Specials represent a vital connection between music, politics, and social change. By combining different musical genres, they created a platform for discussing complex issues. Their work helped make the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela a *cause célèbre* in the United Kingdom. The band's history shows how music can respond to economic recessions and racial tensions. Though the group's lineup changed many times, their impact on the 2 Tone era remained constant. The band's long journey eventually concluded following the death of singer Terry Hall in December 2022.
