Many people thought women only wanted one thing. They believed women should be happy as housewives and mothers. This idea was called the "feminine mystique." Friedan saw that many women felt unhappy. She called this "the problem that has no name."

Friedan studied why women felt this way. She looked at magazines and ads. She found that ads told women to buy many things. These ads made women feel they needed products for their homes. She also looked at schools. Some schools did not give girls hard lessons. They thought too much study might hurt a woman's femininity.

Friedan's book was very important. It helped start a new wave of feminism. This was a movement for women's rights. She even helped start a group called NOW. This group worked to help women in the United States. Her book sold over a million copies. It changed how people thought about women's lives.
