*The Feminine Mystique* is a very important book by an American author named Betty Friedan. It was first published on February 19, 1963. The book became a huge success and sold over one million copies. Friedan used her writing to challenge a common idea in the United States. Many people believed that being a housewife and a mother was the only way for a woman to be happy. Friedan wanted to show that this was not true for everyone. Her work helped start a movement called second-wave feminism.

Friedan began her research after a special request in 1957. She was asked to survey her former classmates from Smith College. She found that many of these women were unhappy with their lives as housewives. Friedan called this feeling "the problem that has no name." To understand this better, she interviewed many suburban housewives. She also studied how media and advertising worked. She wanted to see how these things shaped what women believed about themselves. She even looked at how psychology explained women's lives.

In her book, Friedan explained the "feminine mystique." This was the idea that women would find total happiness through marriage and housework. She noticed that many women felt they had to follow these rules. Some women even left school early to get married. They were afraid that too much education might make it hard to find a husband. Friedan argued that women needed to find their own human identity. She believed women needed meaningful work to grow. This was different from the ideas of thinkers like Sigmund Freud. Freud had suggested that a woman's role was determined by her biology.

Friedan also looked at how different parts of society worked together. She studied how women's magazines were often run by men. These magazines showed women as either happy housewives or unhappy workers. She also looked at how advertisers worked. Advertisers often told housewives they needed many special products to do their jobs well. This encouraged them to stay home and buy things. Friedan even looked at how schools changed for girls. Some schools stopped giving girls challenging classes. They thought too much study might spoil a woman's femininity.

This book changed how people thought about women in America. It brought many women into the feminist movement. After the book came out, Friedan received hundreds of letters from unhappy women. In 1966, she helped start a group called the National Organization for Women, or NOW. She became its very first president. This group worked to help women gain more rights. Some people criticized the book for focusing mostly on white, middle-class women. However, the book is still seen as one of the most influential books of the 20th century. It truly changed history for many people.
