The group consisted of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. They were famous for a distinctive soft musical style. This style combined melodic pop with smooth, easy listening elements. Karen was known for her unique contralto vocals. A contralto is a voice type that is deep and rich. Richard provided the musical foundation through his arranging and composition. Together, they became one of the best-selling music artists in history.

Creating their signature sound involved complex musical techniques. Richard acted as the primary composer and arranger. He often used a Wurlitzer, which is an electric piano, to add texture.

One of his favorite methods was overdubbing. Overdubbing is the process of recording multiple layers of sound over an existing track. Richard used this to layer his and Karen's voices. This created the effect of a large, lush choral sound. Karen was also a skilled instrumentalist. She played the drums and even learned the bass guitar.

The duo's career progressed through several different musical stages. They first performed together in 1965 in a local production. Later, they formed the Richard Carpenter Trio, which focused on jazz. They also led a middle-of-the-road band called Spectrum. Spectrum played at venues like the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles. However, the band struggled because their music was not considered "danceable" by rock standards. Eventually, Richard and Karen decided to perform formally as a duo. They chose the name "Carpenters" to sound hip, similar to other contemporary groups.

The siblings' musical journey began in New Haven, Connecticut. Their family moved to Downey, California, in 1963. This move was intended to provide better musical opportunities for Richard. Richard began piano lessons at age eight. Karen studied ballet and tap dance starting at age four. In 1969, they signed with A&M Records.

This partnership led to massive commercial success. Their first album, titled Offering, was released in October 1969. It received positive reviews from critics and fans alike.

The Carpenters achieved incredible numbers on the music charts. They had a record-breaking run on the American Top 40. On the Billboard Hot 100, they earned three number-one singles. They also achieved five number-two singles and 12 top-10 hits. Their success was even greater on the Adult Contemporary charts. They reached number one there 15 times.

Globally, the duo has sold more than 100 million records. This places them among the elite performers in the music industry.

Despite their success, the duo faced significant personal challenges. The constant touring during the 1970s caused immense strain. Richard struggled with an addiction to a drug called Quaaludes. In 1979, he took a year off to recover. Karen suffered from anorexia nervosa, which is a serious eating disorder. This illness caused severe health complications for her. In 1983, Karen died from heart failure related to her condition. Her death brought widespread attention and research to the topic of eating disorders.

The legacy of The Carpenters remains strong today. Their music continues to receive critical acclaim and commercial success. They are remembered for their technical skill and melodic talent. Their ability to blend pop with sophisticated arrangements changed the landscape of easy listening. Even decades after their career ended, their recordings remain popular worldwide. They represent a significant era in American popular music history.
