The Carpenters were a famous American musical duo made up of siblings.

Richard Carpenter was a talented composer and piano player. His sister, Karen Carpenter, had a very special singing voice called a contralto. Together, they created a soft and melodic style of pop music. This sound was often called easy listening or soft rock. People all over the world loved their beautiful songs. They became one of the best-selling music artists in history.

Making their music was a careful and creative job. Richard wrote the songs and arranged how the instruments sounded. He often used a Wurlitzer, which is an electric piano, to add new sounds.

Richard also liked to use a trick called overdubbing. This meant he recorded voices many times to make a huge choral sound. Karen was a skilled musician who played the drums.

She even played the bass guitar on some of their songs. This teamwork helped them create their unique musical style.

Their musical journey began long before they were famous. The siblings were born in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1963, their family moved to Downey, California, for better musical chances. Richard started taking piano lessons when he was eight years old. Karen loved music too and began taking ballet and tap dance classes. They first performed together in 1965 in a local play. Later, they played in a jazz group called the Richard Carpenter Trio. They also had a band named Spectrum before becoming a duo.

In 1969, they signed with A&M Records as the Carpenters.

They became huge stars very quickly after that. Their song "(They Long to Be) Close to You" was a massive hit. They had three number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. They also had 15 number-one hits on the Adult Contemporary charts. During the 1970s, they toured constantly to perform for fans. This busy life was very successful but also very tiring. They sold more than 100 million records around the world.

Even though they were stars, they faced very hard times. The constant traveling put a lot of strain on them. Richard struggled with an addiction to a medicine called Quaaludes. Karen suffered from a serious illness called anorexia nervosa.

This illness made it very hard for her to stay healthy. Sadly, Karen died in 1983 from heart failure caused by her illness. Her death led to much more research into eating disorders. Today, people still listen to their music and celebrate their talent.
