She is known for her deep, contralto singing voice. People often call her a "confessional" songwriter because she shares her personal feelings in her music. Her songs have reached many people all over the world. She has achieved huge success on the music charts. This success includes 13 top 40 hits in the United States. She even became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Making music became a way for Carly to express herself. As a child, she struggled with a severe stutter. This made it very hard for her to speak clearly. However, she discovered she could sing without any stammering at all. She also has dyslexia, which is a way the brain processes reading. Carly believes this has actually helped her write songs. She once said a song seemed to come straight from the universe into her head.
