Making a hit song was a careful job for Sedaka. In the late 1950s, he studied how successful songs worked to learn their secrets. He listened to the biggest hits over and over again. He studied how they used chords, lyrics, and harmonies to sound good. He often worked with partners like Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody to write his songs. Sometimes, a simple moment helped start a song. For example, his song "The Diary" came from watching singer Connie Francis write in her diary.

Sedaka's musical journey began in Brooklyn, New York. He was born on March 13, 1939, to a family of Jewish descent. His mother, Eleanor, wanted him to be a classical pianist like Van Cliburn. To help him learn, she worked a part-time job for six months to buy him a second-hand piano.

By the age of 13, he met Howard Greenfield, who would become his longtime writing partner. Sedaka graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1956. This same school was also attended by other famous people like Neil Diamond and Mel Brooks.

His career had many bright moments and different stages. He had many big hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some of these famous songs include "Oh! Carol" from 1959 and "Calendar Girl" from 1960. His most famous song, "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," reached number one in 1962. Even when his popularity slowed down, he made a big comeback in the mid-1970s. In 1975, he had two number one hits called "Laughter in the Rain" and "Bad Blood."

Sedaka's music reached far beyond the United States. He was very popular in Italy and sang many of his hits in the Italian language. One of his Italian songs, "La terza luna," even reached number one on the Italian charts in 1963. He also wrote songs that became famous for other singers, such as "Stupid Cupid" for Connie Francis. Even as he got older, he found new ways to share his music. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he performed mini-concerts on social media for his fans.
