Throughout his long career, he wrote or co-wrote over 500 songs. These songs were performed by himself and many other famous artists. His work helped shape the sound of popular music for decades. He achieved massive commercial success by selling millions of records worldwide. His lasting impact on the music industry led to his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983.

Sedaka's method for creating successful music involved both collaboration and intense study. He often worked with lyricists, most notably Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody. To improve his craft, Sedaka once studied the mechanics of current hits. He purchased the three biggest singles of the time to analyze them. He listened to them repeatedly to understand their song structure. He also studied their chord progressions, lyrics, and harmonies. This disciplined approach helped him transition from a struggling artist to a hitmaker.

His musical career can be divided into several distinct eras. He began in the late 1950s as a member of the doo-wop group the Tokens. After leaving that group, he launched a solo career with RCA Victor. His first major success came with the single "The Diary" in 1958. This was followed by a string of hits in the early 1960s. After a period of declining popularity during the British Invasion, he experienced a major revival. In 1975, he achieved two number one hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. These were "Laughter in the Rain" and "Bad Blood."

Sedaka's roots were firmly planted in Brooklyn, New York. He was born on March 13, 1939, to a family of Lebanese and Ashkenazi Jewish descent. His mother, Eleanor, supported his musical education with great dedication. She worked a part-time job for six months to afford a second-hand upright piano. In 1947, Sedaka earned a piano scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music's Preparatory Division. He studied there on Saturdays while developing an interest in pop music. He also attended Abraham Lincoln High School, graduating in 1956.

As a songwriter, Sedaka's influence extended to many other prominent performers. He and Howard Greenfield wrote many hits for Connie Francis. One such song was "Stupid Cupid," which reached number 14 on the Billboard charts. They also wrote songs for Jimmy Clanton, such as "Another Sleepless Night." Sedaka's songwriting reached various international markets through other artists as well. He penned "(Is This the Way to) Amarillo" for Tony Christie. He also wrote "Love Will Keep Us Together," which was a hit for Captain & Tennille.

Sedaka's popularity was a global phenomenon, particularly in Italy. He recorded many of his English hits in the Italian language. For example, he recorded "Esagerata," which was a local version of "Little Devil." His song "La terza luna" reached number one on the Italian pop charts in April 1963.

His Italian diction was so precise that his recordings had very little American accent. This ability to cross linguistic boundaries allowed his music to reach diverse audiences. His success in Italy was supported by the RCA Victor Italiana branch.

Beyond his solo singing, Sedaka was a skilled session pianist. His playing can be heard on the 1959 hit "Dream Lover" by Bobby Darin. He also engaged with modern technology to reach fans later in life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he performed a series of mini-concerts on social media.

His career demonstrates how a musician can adapt to changing musical trends. From classical training to pop stardom and digital performances, Sedaka remained a constant figure in music.
