He is recognized as one of the best-selling musicians in history. In the United States alone, he has sold more than 56.5 million records. His career is defined by both his solo performances and his skill as a composer. Diamond has achieved massive success on the Billboard charts. He has written and recorded ten singles that reached No. 1 on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the Adult Contemporary charts. These hits include "Cracklin' Rosie," "Song Sung Blue," and "America."

Diamond's journey into music began with a transformative experience during his youth.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family, he grew up in a household of immigrants. His father was a dry-goods merchant, and his mother's family came from Russia. At age 16, Diamond received his first guitar. During a summer at Surprise Lake Camp, he witnessed a performance by folk singer Pete Seeger. This event inspired him to begin writing his own music immediately. He used songwriting as a way to express youthful frustrations. He even found early success by writing poems for classmates.

Before becoming a full-time musician, Diamond pursued other paths. He attended New York University as a pre-med major. He also competed as a member of the 1960 NCAA men's championship fencing team. However, his interest in songwriting eventually outweighed his academic studies. He began traveling to Tin Pan Alley to show his work to publishers. In his senior year of college, he accepted a 16-week job at Sunbeam Music Publishing. The position paid $50 a week. This job led him to drop out of college to pursue music professionally.

His early professional years were marked by financial struggle and a nomadic lifestyle.

After his initial contract ended, he wrote songs for various publishing houses. He often wrote on buses or in a small space above the Birdland Club in New York City. During this period, he earned only enough to spend 35 cents a day on food. He struggled to find the right balance between complex lyrics and catchy musical "hooks." Eventually, his style evolved, leading to hits like "Solitary Man." This song, which he described as an outgrowth of his despair, became his first chart success as a solo artist.

In the mid-1960s, Diamond became a highly successful songwriter for other artists. He wrote several hits for the Monkees, including "I'm a Believer" and "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You." The song "I'm a Believer" was particularly significant. It became a gold record within just two days and was named the Popular Music Song of the Year in 1966. Many other famous artists also recorded his work. These included Elvis Presley, Lulu, and the rock band Deep Purple. This era established his reputation as a master of the popular song format.

Diamond's solo career reached new heights in the 1970s as his sound became more mellow.

He moved to Los Angeles and produced legendary hits like "Sweet Caroline." Interestingly, he composed "Sweet Caroline" in only one hour while staying in a Memphis hotel. He also became a pioneer of live concert experiences. He performed sold-out shows at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles using a quadraphonic sound system. This technology created a full surround-sound effect for the audience. He also became the first rock-era star to headline a show on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater.

Throughout his life, Diamond has received numerous prestigious honors. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984. In 2011, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has also been honored with the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. His career demonstrates the intersection of songwriting, commercial success, and live performance art. His influence continues to be felt through the many artists who have interpreted his compositions.
