He is widely recognized by his nickname, the "Piano Man," which comes from his signature 1973 song. Joel is one of the most successful musicians in history. He has sold over 160 million records to listeners around the world. In the United States, he holds the rank of the fourth-best-selling solo artist. His musical style primarily encompasses pop and rock genres. He has also explored classical music through his compositions.

Joel's musical development involved several distinct stages and different groups. In his early years, he played in a group called the Echoes. This band specialized in covers of the British Invasion style. He later joined a Long Island group known as the Hassles. He also formed a duo called Attila with drummer Jon Small. After these experiences, Joel began his solo career with the album Cold Spring Harbor in 1971. This debut was a technical disappointment because it was mastered at too high a speed. However, it introduced songs like "She's Got a Way" to his growing audience.

A major turning point occurred in 1972 due to a radio broadcast. A live performance of his song "Captain Jack" was featured on WMMR-FM in Philadelphia. The song became the most requested track in the station's history. This sudden popularity caught the attention of Columbia Records. Joel signed a new contract and moved to Los Angeles for three years. During this time, he worked at a piano bar called The Executive Room. He performed there under the name "Bill Martin." This period helped prepare him for his massive solo success.

Joel achieved significant commercial breakthroughs through several key albums. His 1977 album, The Stranger, was a major critical and commercial success. It sold more than 10 million copies and included hits like "Just the Way You Are." His 1978 album, 52nd Street, was his first to reach number one on the Billboard 200. In 1980, his album Glass Houses attempted to establish him further as a rock artist. This album featured "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," his first single to top the Billboard Hot 100. He also released An Innocent Man in 1983. This album paid homage to 1950s genres like rhythm and blues and doo-wop.

His family history and early education also shaped his musical path. Joel was born in the Bronx in 1949 and moved to Hicksville, Long Island. His father, Howard Joel, was an amateur classical pianist who emigrated from Germany. His mother, Rosalind, insisted that Joel begin piano lessons at age four. He studied formally until he was 16 years old. During his youth, Joel also competed as an amateur boxer in the Golden Gloves circuit. He won 22 of his 26 fights before a broken nose ended his boxing career. Interestingly, Joel did not graduate from high school because he focused on playing piano bars. He eventually received his diploma 25 years later through a special school board process.

Beyond his studio albums, Joel has made significant contributions to other media and global culture. He provided voiceover work for the Disney film Oliver & Company in 1988. He also contributed to various film soundtracks. In 1987, he became one of the first artists to hold a rock tour in the Soviet Union. Even after largely retiring from studio production after 1993, he continued to compose. He released classical compositions in 2001 and returned to new music with a single in 2024. His ability to move between pop, rock, and classical music shows his broad musical range.
