The music can be played by singers or by an orchestra. Most people today hear the version played by an orchestra. This version uses only instruments and no words.

Listening to the music is like going on a journey. It starts with a quiet and calm mood. Violins make a shimmering sound called a tremolo. Then, horns play a melody to start the theme. The main waltz melody is gentle and rises upward. It is played by cellos, horns, and a harp. You can feel the waltz beat at the end of each phrase. The music moves through many different moods and keys. Some parts are loud and joyful with cymbal crashes. Other parts feel more serious or romantic.

This music has a very interesting history. It was first performed on February 15, 1867. A group called the Vienna Men's Choral Association played it. At first, the performance was only a mild success. Strauss even said he had regrets about the music. He wanted the ending, called a coda, to be better. Later, he made a version for the 1867 Paris World's Fair. That instrumental version became a huge success.
