It was first played for a group of singers in Vienna. At first, it was only a mild success. Strauss even felt some regret about the music. He later made a version for an orchestra. An orchestra is a large group of instruments. This new version was a great success at a big fair in Paris.

Most people hear the instrumental version today. The music starts with a quiet and calm mood. It uses violins and horns to set the tone. Then, the main waltz melody begins. It sounds bright and happy. The music uses many instruments like flutes, trumpets, and harps. A full performance can last about ten minutes. The piece has a grand ending with a drum roll. People all over the world still love this music.
