He was known as the "Father of the Viennese Waltz." He wrote music for dancing. He made waltzes and fast songs called polkas. He also wrote galops, which are very quick songs. His music helped turn simple dances into the famous Viennese waltz. This style uses a three-quarter beat.

Strauss worked very hard to be successful. He started as an apprentice to a bookbinder. Later, he joined an orchestra. He eventually formed his own band in 1825. He even traveled to many countries. He played his music in Britain for Queen Victoria. He also brought a dance called the quadrille to Austria.

He had three sons named Johann, Josef, and Eduard. They all became musicians too. This created a big musical family. His music was so loved that people called him a hero in Vienna. One writer said Vienna without Strauss is like Austria without its big river.
