Telogen effluvium

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hair grows in a cycle. It has a resting phase. We call this phase telogen. Most people lose about 125 hairs every day. This is normal. It does not change how you look.

Sometimes, hair sheds too fast. This is called telogen effluvium. It makes hair look thin. This happens when hairs enter the telogen phase too early.

Many things can cause this change. Stress can change the hair cycle. Being sick or having surgery can also do it. Some people lose hair after having a baby. This is due to pregnancy hormones.

There are different ways the cycle changes. Some hairs stay in the growing phase too long. Other hairs skip the growing phase. Some drugs can make hairs fall out quickly. Even the seasons can cause hair loss in some people.

Doctors use tests to find the cause. They may look at the scalp. They might take a tiny piece of skin. This is called a biopsy. Some treatments can help. Some products make hair strands thicker. This can make hair look fuller.
