It is also called androgenetic alopecia. This happens to many people as they age. About half of men and one quarter of women have it by age 50.

In men, hair loss often starts at the temples or the top of the head. This can leave a ring of hair around the sides.

Women often see hair get thin all over the scalp.

This type of thinning is called diffuse thinning.

Why does this happen? It is caused by genes and hormones. One main hormone is called DHT. This hormone can make hair follicles, the tiny parts that grow hair, become sensitive. In some people, DHT makes hair grow on the face but stops it on the scalp. This is called the androgen paradox.

Doctors have many ways to help. Some people use medicine or laser therapy. Others may choose to shave their heads or change their hair style. Even if hair is gone, the tiny parts that make hair may just be sleeping, not gone forever.
