Pattern hair loss is the most common way people lose their hair.

Scientists call this condition androgenetic alopecia. It happens in different ways for men and women. In men, hair loss often starts at the temples or the crown of the head. This can leave a ring of hair around the sides called a "Hippocratic wreath."

For women, the hair usually gets thinner all over the scalp. This is known as diffuse thinning.

It is a very common thing to see as people get older.

This hair loss happens because of how certain hormones and genes work together. One main hormone is called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT.

An enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase helps turn testosterone into DHT. In some parts of the body, DHT helps hair grow. However, in the scalp, it can make hair follicles shrink. This strange difference is called the androgen paradox. The hair follicles do not disappear forever. Instead, they often just become dormant, which means they are sleeping.

Researchers have studied this for a long time to find the causes. They found that humans have a special sensitivity to these hormones. This is different from our close relatives, like chimpanzees. Scientists also looked at how genes are passed down through families. They found that about 80% of bald men have fathers who were also bald. This suggests that the way hair loss is inherited might involve more than just standard genes.

There are many interesting facts about how this affects different groups. By the age of 50, about half of all men have pattern hair loss. About one quarter of women experience it too. Some studies show that men who lose hair very early, before age 35, may have other health links. These men might have a higher chance of metabolic syndrome. This is a group of health issues that includes things like high blood pressure.

They may also have higher insulin resistance.

People manage pattern hair loss in many different ways. Some choose to change their hair style to hide the thinning. Others decide to shave their heads completely. There are also medical ways to help. Doctors may suggest low-level laser therapy or special medicines like minoxidil. Some people even use hair transplant surgery. It is important to know that some medicines are not for women. Using certain drugs during pregnancy can cause birth defects. People use many tools to feel good about their appearance.
