Telogen effluvium

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hair grows in a steady cycle. Most people lose about 125 hairs every single day. This is normal and does not change how you look.

However, some people experience a scalp disorder called telogen effluvium. This condition makes hair look thin or shed too much. It happens when hairs enter the telogen phase too early. The telogen phase is the resting phase for a hair follicle.

There are five ways the hair cycle can change. First, immediate anagen release happens when follicles leave the growing phase early. This change becomes visible two to three months later. Second, delayed anagen release is common during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones keep the growing phase going longer. This leads to heavy hair shedding after the baby is born.

Third, short anagen syndrome makes the growing phase too short. This is often the cause of chronic hair loss.

Other changes involve the resting phase itself. Immediate telogen release can happen because of certain drugs. For example, a drug called minoxidil can cause this. This causes a large release of club hairs.

Delayed telogen release means the resting phase lasts too long. This can happen during certain seasons. In animals, this helps them shed winter coats. Humans might also see seasonal hair loss.

Many things can cause this hair cycle change. Emotional or physical stress is a major factor. This includes things like major surgery or chronic illness. Eating disorders and crash diets can also play a part. Other causes include anemia or hypothyroidism.

Doctors use tests to find the exact cause. They may use a trichogram or trichoscopy. They might also perform a biopsy. A biopsy is taking a tiny piece of skin to look at.

Some treatments can help make hair look fuller. New cosmetic products use many different ingredients. One mix uses caffeine, niacinamide, panthenol, dimethicone, and an acrylate polymer. This is called CNPDA.

This mix can increase the diameter of hair fibers. It can grow hair by 2 to 5 micrometers. This makes the hair look about 10% thicker. It also makes the hair more supple and strong.
