Teleosauridae is a family of extinct sea reptiles. These animals lived during the Jurassic period. They were part of a group called crocodylomorphs. Many of them looked like the modern gharial. A gharial is a type of crocodile with a very long snout.

These reptiles were very important to their ancient world. They lived in many different types of homes. Some lived in the deep ocean. Others lived near the coast or in river mouths. Some might have even lived on land.

Different kinds of teleosaurids worked in different ways. Some were generalists. This means they could eat many different things. Others were specialists. One kind, called Bathysuchus, had a long snout to eat fish. Another kind, called Teleosaurus, might have lived partly on land.

Scientists split them into two main groups. One group is called Teleosaurinae. These animals had heavy armor. Their nostrils faced forward. This helped them live partly on land. The other group is called Aeolodontini.

Researchers have worked hard to understand these animals. In the 21st century, they studied how these reptiles were related. Mark T. Young and his team helped define the family. They used a system called the PhyloCode. This system helps scientists name groups based on their family trees. In 2024, Mark Young and his team found new details. They found that a genus called Seldsienean belongs in this family. They think it is a close relative to the Aeolodontini group.

We know where these animals lived from their fossils. These fossils are found in a large area called Laurasia. Scientists found bones in many parts of Europe. This includes England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia, and Switzerland.

They also found them in Asia. Fossils have been found in China and Thailand. Some might even be in India. These locations show how far these reptiles traveled. They lived in many different environments across the globe.

Teleosaurids are like a puzzle of different lifestyles. You can compare them to modern crocodiles. Some crocodiles live in rivers, while others live near the sea. Teleosaurids did something similar but even more. They filled many different roles in the ocean and on land. Some were small and common. Others were more specialized for deep water. This variety helped them survive in many places. They were a very diverse family of ancient reptiles.
