Metriorhynchidae were a special family of ancient sea animals.

They were part of a group called crocodyliforms. This means they were related to the crocodiles we see today. However, these animals were very different from modern crocodiles. They lived almost their entire lives in the open ocean. They lived from the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous period. This was a long time ago. Scientists call them pelagic because they lived in the deep sea.

These animals had bodies built for swimming through water. Their bodies were hydrodynamic, which means they were shaped to move easily. They had a tail fluke, just like a shark. This helped them swim fast. Their front limbs were small and looked like paddles. Unlike living crocodiles, they did not have hard armor plates on their skin. Instead, they had smooth skin. This helped them glide through the sea. They were also poikilothermic. This means they could not control their own body heat.

Because of their bodies, they could not walk on land. Their limbs were not strong enough for walking. This suggests they gave live birth to their babies. Scientists found a fossil of a pregnant Dakosaurus in Bavaria, Germany.

This fossil showed a complete skeleton of a newborn inside the mother. The baby had small paddles that were not good for walking. This proves the babies were born ready for the water. This is a very important discovery for scientists.

Many different kinds of these animals lived in many places. Fossils have been found in many countries. These include England, France, Germany, and Italy. They were also found in Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. They lived in places like Russia, Poland, and Switzerland. The name Metriorhynchidae was given by Leopold Fitzinger in 1843. He was a zoologist from Austria. He studied these ancient creatures a long time ago.

Scientists are still learning how to group these animals. In the past, people thought some groups were natural. However, new studies in 2009 changed this. Researchers Mark T. Young and Marco Brandalise de Andrade reshuffled the names. They found that some old groups were not actually related. Now, we use different names for different branches of the family. One group is called Metriorhynchinae. Another group is called Geosaurinae. This helps us understand how they all grew and changed.
