A tapestry is a beautiful kind of textile art.

It is made by weaving colorful threads by hand on a loom. Unlike most woven cloth, tapestry is special because it hides the vertical threads. These long threads are called the warp. The weaver interlaces colorful horizontal threads, called the weft, over the warp. This technique is called weft-faced weaving. Because the weft covers everything, it can create detailed pictures and images.

Many people value tapestries because they are grand and artistic. In the past, they were the most expensive way to show pictures. They could fill a whole room with color and stories.

Making a tapestry is a very careful job.

The weaver often works on the back of the cloth. To know what to make, they follow a large drawing called a cartoon. Some weavers use an upright loom called a high-warp loom. Others use a horizontal loom called a low-warp loom. On a low-warp loom, the artist might place the cartoon underneath the threads. This allows them to see the design through the web of yarn. The weaver must be very skilled to make the patterns look right.

This art has a very long history.

We find traces of tapestry weaving in ancient Egypt. For example, a robe and a glove were found in the tomb of Tutankhamen. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, tapestries became very popular in Europe. They were often made in large sets for palaces. In the 19th century, the tradition was revived on a smaller scale. Even though painting became more popular, tapestries remained important for a long time.

Different materials change how a tapestry looks and costs.

Most weavers use wool or cotton for the warp threads. The weft threads can be wool, but they can also be silk. Silk makes a piece much softer and more expensive. Some of the most precious tapestries even use gold or silver thread. Adding gold can make a tapestry cost fifty times more than wool alone!

They were very useful because they were portable. Kings could fold them into large bags and move them on carts. This allowed them to take their art to different homes. In cold castles, tapestries helped keep rooms warm during the winter. They were also used to cover furniture like beds or chairs. Some even hung behind a throne to show a leader's power.
