It includes many different crafts like sewing and embroidery. Some people use a hook to do crochet. Others use a small tool called a shuttle for tatting. These skills help people learn to use their hands with care. People can make many beautiful things with these tools. You might see an embroidered book cover or even knitted boots.

The things you can decorate are limited only by your imagination.

There are many ways to work with thread and cloth. You can try appliqué or making beautiful lace. Some people use a loom for bead weaving. Others might enjoy knitting, quilting, or making tassels. You can even try macramé or needlepoint. Each method uses different movements and tools to create art. Learning one type of needlework helps you learn others too. This is because many crafts use the same types of fibers. You also use similar fine motor skills for each one.

History shows that needlework has changed over many years. During the Italian Renaissance, needlework was a big part of life. Women of all classes learned how to sew and weave. Many women practiced their stitches on long rows called band samplers. Two of the most common stitches were tent and cross stitches. These works often showed stories from the Bible. They also showed scenes from Greek and Roman myths. Some patterns used interlocking knots called Islamic arabesques.

In the Victorian age, needlework became a very important part of life. A growing middle class had more leisure time to craft. Women used printed books to find thousands of new patterns. They often did "fancy work" while they talked with guests. This was different from plain sewing used for housework. Showing handmade needlework was a sign of a well-managed home. People made many items like fans and lampshades. They even decorated sofa cushions and footstools with their skill.

Today, we can see how these traditions connect to our world. Many different cultures have their own special styles. For example, there is Chinese needlework and Korean embroidery. There is also Suzani and Turkmen needlework. These styles show how people share their history through thread. You can find many books that teach these old ways. Even in the past, people like Elizabeth I practiced these arts. She made an embroidered book cover when she was eleven. Needlework remains a way to show skill and grace.
