It comes from cows, pigs, or sheep. People melt the fat to make it useful. This melting way is called rendering.

After melting, some solid bits are left behind. These are called cracklings or greaves. People use these bits for animal food or fish bait.

Tallow has many jobs. It is a main part of soap. People also use it to make candles.

Long ago, these were cheap ways to get light. In the kitchen, tallow is used for deep frying. It is also a key part of pemmican. This is a food made by Native Americans.

Some big machines use tallow as a grease. It helps parts move without rubbing too hard. It can even be turned into fuel for planes. The U.S. Air Force tested a plane using beef tallow fuel. This shows how much we can do with one thing. Tallow is truly a busy material.
