language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Takoyaki are tasty, round snacks from Japan. Many people call them "octopus balls."

These snacks are made from a wheat flour batter. Most balls have bits of octopus inside. They also hold tempura scraps, pickled ginger, and green onion.

Cooks often brush them with sauce and mayonnaise. They might sprinkle green laver or dried bonito on top. People eat them as a snack or between meals. In some areas, they are a side dish with rice.

Making these snacks is a special skill. Cooks use a heavy cast iron pan. This pan has many small, round holes.

The iron heats the batter very evenly. A cook uses a small pick to turn the balls. This pulls the uncooked batter into the round holes. This step helps the snack become a perfect sphere. Some people use electric pans at home. Others use gas cookers at big festivals.

A man named Tomekichi Endo helped make this snack famous. He lived in the city of Osaka. He is credited with inventing takoyaki in 1935. Before this, people ate snacks called kushi-dango in Osaka. These had beef or konjac inside. In Akashi, there was a snack called akashiyaki. That snack used egg batter and octopus. Endo combined these ideas to create takoyaki.

Today, takoyaki is found in many places. It started in the Kansai region of Japan. Later, it spread to the Kantō region and other areas. You can find them at street stalls called yatai. Many specialty restaurants serve them too. They are even sold in supermarkets and convenience stores.

The food is also very popular in Taiwan. Some modern shops add cheese or bacon inside. This shows how the food can change over time.

Takoyaki is even part of stories and shows. A character named Taruruto loves this food. He is from a manga called Magical Taruruto. There is also a book called Takoyaki Mantoman. In that story, a group of takoyaki fights crime.

This snack is a big part of Japanese culture. It connects history, cooking, and fun stories together. It is a treat that people everywhere enjoy.
