Takoyaki

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Takoyaki are tasty, round snacks from Japan. They are often called "octopus balls."

These snacks are made from a wheat flour batter. Most balls have bits of octopus inside. They also have tempura scraps, pickled ginger, and green onion.

People often brush them with sauce and mayonnaise. They might add green laver or dried bonito flakes on top.

A man named Tomekichi Endo made them famous. He lived in Osaka. He likely invented them in 1935. He combined old snack ideas to make this new treat. Today, his shop Aizuya still exists. They serve the original style without sauce.

To make them, cooks use a special iron pan. The pan has many small, round holes. Cooks use a small pick to turn the balls. This helps them stay round as they cook. You can find them at street stalls or festivals. Some people even eat them with cheese or bacon. Takoyaki is a very popular food in Japan and Taiwan.
