The name comes from two words. One word means pig. The other word is short for cutlet. This dish is a type of yōshoku. That means it is Western-style food made in Japan.

It started in the late 1800s. A restaurant in Tokyo made a pork version in 1899. People love it because it is crunchy and tasty.

To make it, cooks use pork loin or fillet. They salt and pepper the meat. Then they use flour and beaten egg. They coat the meat in panko, which are bread crumbs. Next, they deep-fry it in oil. People often slice the meat into small bits. They serve it with shredded cabbage and rice. You might also eat it with miso soup. Many people use a thick sauce called tonkatsu sauce. Some people like to eat it with a slice of lemon.
