Sicilian pizza comes from the island of Sicily in Italy.

It has many different styles. Some kinds are round. Others are shaped like a rectangle. One common kind is called sfincione. It comes from the province of Palermo. This pizza has a thick dough. It often has tomato sauce, onion, and herbs. People may add anchovies or strong cheese. Sometimes the sauce goes on top of the toppings. This keeps the dough from getting too soft.

Different cities have their own special ways to make pizza. In Syracuse, people make a round stuffed pizza called pizzòlu.

In Catania, they make scacciata. This is dough filled with cheese and anchovies. Some versions also use potatoes, sausage, or broccoli. In Messina, people make piduni. This is a calzone stuffed with endive and cheese.

Sicilian immigrants brought these ideas to the United States. In America, many people call square pizza "Sicilian style." This pizza is often over an inch thick. It has a crunchy bottom and a light middle. It is very popular in many states.
