He was born around the year 56 or 57. We do not know exactly where he was born. He studied how to speak well in public. This is called rhetoric. He became very good at speaking to large groups.

Tacitus held many important jobs in the Roman government. He was a lawyer and a member of the senate. He also served as a governor in a place called Asia.

During his life, some Roman leaders were unfair to people. These hard times made Tacitus want to write about the truth.

He wrote several big books about history. His most famous works are called the *Annals* and the *Histories*. These books tell the story of the Roman Empire. They cover many years of Roman rule. He also wrote about a general named Agricola. His books help us learn how people lived long ago. Many scholars still study his work today.
