This book tells the story of the Roman Empire. It covers a very wild time in history.

One part of the story is about the Year of Four Emperors. This happened in the year AD 69. After the leader Nero died, four men fought for power.

They were Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian. Each man ruled for only a short time. This showed that the army held great power. An emperor could be chosen anywhere the soldiers were gathered.

Tacitus wrote in a very fast way. His stories feel like a play with many scenes. He describes how large crowds act. He shows when people feel panic or fear. He also writes about the lives of the Jewish people.

Much of his work is lost today. We only have about half of his books. Still, his writing helps us understand the past. He shows that a good leader must keep peace and respect the law.
