It sits in the Yangtze Delta, a very important area in Eastern China. The city is known as a major hub for both tourism and modern industry. For many centuries, it was a center for art, trade, and learning. Some people even called it "paradise on earth" because it was so beautiful. Today, it remains a vital part of the region's economy and culture.

Much of the city's success comes from its location near water. The Grand Canal runs through the area, which helped trade grow for a long time. This water path allowed goods to move easily between different places. In the past, the city was laid out in a grid of nine squares. The royal palace sat right in the center of this design. Even today, you can see how water and land work together in the city.

The city has had many different names over the years. During the Zhou dynasty, a settlement called Gusu sat nearby. The name "Suzhou" was first used officially in AD 589 during the Sui dynasty. For a long time, it was the largest city in the world that was not a capital. It held this title until about 1850, when Shanghai became larger.

There are many special things to see in Suzhou. The classical gardens are world-famous for mixing plants, rocks, and water.
