It sits within the Yangtze Delta megalopolis in Eastern China. The city is a vital industrial hub and a massive center for tourism. It is widely recognized as the cradle of Wu culture. For many centuries, Suzhou served as a primary economic and scholarly center. It is famous for blending ancient traditions with modern high-end manufacturing. The city is also known for its poetic classical gardens. These gardens combine architecture, water, rocks, and plants into natural art.

The development of Suzhou was deeply tied to its water networks. The Grand Canal provided a strategic route for trade and commerce. This allowed the city to become a regional metropolis for foreign trade. During the Tang dynasty, the Shantang Canal was built to connect the city to Tiger Hill.

This connection helped facilitate tourism even in ancient times. The city's layout was originally a symbolic three-by-three grid. This grid consisted of nine squares with a royal palace at the center. Much of the city's historical identity was shaped by these canals and stone bridges.

Suzhou has undergone many name changes throughout its long history. During the Zhou dynasty, a settlement called Gusu was the capital of the state of Wu. In 514 BC, King Helü established a new capital nearby called Helü City.

This site eventually grew into the modern city of Suzhou. The name "Suzhou" was officially used starting in AD 589 during the Sui dynasty. The "Su" in the name is a contraction of Gusu. In the Old Yue language, the name refers to a "Satisfied place." Before modern pinyin, the name was often written as Soo-chow or Suchow.

The city's economic status has shifted significantly over the millennia. From the 10th century onwards, it was a massive commercial center. It held the title of the largest non-capital city in the world. This status lasted until approximately 1850 when Shanghai overtook it. During the Ming dynasty, scholar-officials built famous private gardens in the "Jiangnan style." These gardens were so influential that they were later copied in other famous locations. In the late 19th century, the city was known for silk and publishing. By the early 20th century, thousands of silk looms were in operation.

Today, Suzhou is a powerhouse of modern economic growth. Since the reform and opening up began in 1978, it saw rapid expansion. The city achieved GDP growth rates of about 14% over 35 years. In 2023, the city had 5 million registered residents. Suzhou is also a leader in modern science and technology. The Nature Index 2025 ranks it as the 33rd global city by scientific output. The city contains many high-tech enterprises, with over 16,000 existing as of 2023. This economic activity contributes roughly 20% of the total GDP for Jiangsu Province.

The administrative structure of Suzhou is divided into several distinct parts. The Gusu District serves as the historic urban core and the "Old Town."

To the east, the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) acts as a major economic zone. This park was created through a partnership between China and Singapore in 1994.
