A sport utility vehicle, or SUV, is a special type of car. These vehicles mix parts from passenger cars with parts from off-road vehicles.

Many SUVs have raised ground clearance to drive over bumps. They often use four-wheel drive to help them move on rough ground. There is no single rule that defines an SUV. Some experts say they must use a light truck chassis, which is a strong frame. Others say any car with off-road features counts as an SUV.

How an SUV works often depends on how it is built. In the past, most used body-on-frame construction. This means a separate body sits on top of a sturdy frame. Today, many use unibody construction. This is a way of building a car where the frame and body are one single piece.

This style is common in crossover SUVs. These vehicles aim to feel like smooth passenger cars. They still offer the high seating and view that people like.

The history of these vehicles goes back a long time. They grew from military models in the late 1930s. In 1949, four-wheel-drive station wagons began to appear. The 1955 GAZ-M20 Pobeda M-72 was a very early version of a crossover. Later, the 1977 Lada Niva used a unibody design and independent suspension. The 1984 Jeep Cherokee became a huge sales success for unibody models. By the late 1990s, SUVs became much more popular than large sedans.

SUVs are a huge part of the world today. In 2021, they made up 45.9% of the global passenger car market. However, they face many criticisms regarding safety and the planet. SUVs emit about 700 megatonnes of carbon dioxide every year. This gas is linked to global warming. Between 2010 and 2018, they were the second-largest cause of rising global emissions. They also use more fuel than smaller cars. This means they require more resources to make and run.

Safety is another important thing to notice about SUVs. Because they are tall, they have a high center of gravity. This makes them more likely to roll over in a crash. In 2003, they were 2.5 times more likely to roll over than regular cars. Their high front ends can also be dangerous for people walking. A 2021 study showed SUVs are 8 times more likely to kill children in a crash.
