Most cars have a trunk that is a separate space. A hatchback is different because it has a rear door. This door is hinged at the roof level. It swings upward to let you reach the cargo area. This area is part of the same space as the passengers.

This is often called a two-box design. You can also fold the rear seats down. This makes the inside much bigger for carrying things.

There are many ways these cars can look. Some people call them three-door or five-door cars. This count includes the rear hatch as a door.

You might also see a liftback. A liftback is a type of hatchback with a sloped roof. Toyota used this name in 1973 for the Celica Liftback GT.

Some hatchbacks look like sedans but have a roof-hinged door. These are called notchbacks. An example is the 1951 Kaiser-Frazer Vagabond. These cars are different from station wagons. Station wagons are usually longer and have more room.

People have been making hatchbacks for a long time.

The first production hatchback was made by Citroën in 1938. It was called the Commerciale. It was made for workers like bakers and grocers. These people needed to carry big, bulky items. In 1949, Kaiser-Frazer made the Vagabond and Traveler. Some people call these "America's First Hatchback." Later, the British Motor Corporation made the Countryman in 1959. It had a special two-piece tailgate.

Many famous cars became very popular hatchbacks.

The Renault 4 was a huge success. It was the first million-selling, compact two-box car. It sold over 8 million cars by 1992. In 1965, the Renault 16 became a famous family hatchback. Another important car was the 1967 Simca 1100. It was the first hatchback with a transverse engine. This means the engine sits sideways to save space. The Austin Maxi was also a popular competitor.

Today, you can find hatchbacks everywhere in the world.

Some people call them Sportback or Gran Turismo. In North America, the AMC Gremlin was a famous small car. It looked like a hatchback but was called a Kammback. Hatchbacks remain a smart way to travel. They mix passenger space with plenty of room for gear.
