A sedan is a very common type of passenger car.

Most people recognize them by their three-box design. This means the car has three separate areas. The first area holds the engine at the front. The second area is for the passengers to sit. The third area at the back is for cargo.

There are many ways a sedan can work. A typical sedan has a fixed metal roof. It also has a B-pillar, which is the post between the front and rear windows. This pillar helps support the roof. Most sedans have two rows of seats. Some have four doors, while others have only two.

Some styles have a roof that slopes down quickly. This is called a fastback design. Other sedans have a notchback style with a flat trunk lid.

The name sedan has a very old history. It comes from the sedan chair used in the 1630s.

A sedan chair was an enclosed box with windows. It was made to carry just one person. Porters carried the chair using long horizontal poles. The word likely comes from a Latin root meaning "to sit." Before cars, people used different names for enclosed carriages. In France, they used the word berline. In Italy, they called them berlina.

People began using the word sedan for cars in 1912.

This happened when the Studebaker Four and Six models were sold. Some experts think the 1911 Speedwell was the first true sedan. This car was made in Dayton, Ohio. It was a closed, two-door car. Other early cars like the 1899 Renault Voiturette Type B had roofs. However, they were not always called sedans. The 1900 De Dion-Bouton Type D also had a similar shape.

Different parts of the world use different names for these cars. In the United Kingdom, people often call a sedan a saloon.

In Germany, they use the word Limousine. In France, they still use the term berline. You can think of a sedan as a way to organize travel. Just as the old sedan chair carried a person safely, the modern sedan carries families. It keeps the engine, the people, and the bags in their own special spots.
