A station wagon is a special kind of car with a long roof.

Most cars have a separate trunk for luggage. A station wagon changes this design. It extends the roof far back over the passenger area. This creates one big space for both people and cargo. This style is often called an estate car in the United Kingdom.

In Australia and New Zealand, people usually call them wagons. In Germany and Poland, they use the word kombi. This name is short for a combination motor vehicle.

These cars work by using a smart design. Most wagons use a two-box design. This means the engine is one box and the passenger area is the second box.

They use pillars to hold up the roof. These are named A, B, and C pillars. Station wagons often have a fourth pillar called a D-pillar. To make more room for gear, you can fold the rear seats down. This makes the floor flat for easy loading. Some wagons even have three rows of seats. The very back row can face forward, backward, or even to the side.

Station wagons have a very long history. They started as vehicles to carry people and luggage to train stations.

In the United States, early models were called depot hackneys or taxis. These often used a Model T chassis with wooden bodies. People called these wooden cars "woodies." By the 1920s, the name changed to describe vehicles meant for passengers. Since the 2010s, many people have chosen SUVs or crossovers instead of wagons. However, they remain a classic part of car history.

There are many ways to open the back of a wagon. Some use a liftgate, which is a large door at the back.

In the 1920s, many had a split gate. This had a window that went up and a door that went down. In the 1960s, Ford made a "Magic Doorgate." This special door could either fold down or swing open on its side. From 1971 to 1976, General Motors made "clamshell" tailgates. These were called "disappearing" tailgates because the glass slid into the roof. The bottom part even moved below the floor.

Many station wagons share parts with other cars. They often use the same engine and transmission as a sedan.

This makes building them easier for companies. You might see different names for wagons depending on the maker. Some call them Avants, Breaks, or Caravans. Others use names like Touring or Variant. Whether you are carrying groceries or camping gear, the station wagon is built for the job. It turns a regular car into a helpful tool for travel.
